The Freedom of Knowing the Truth

Proverbs 23: 7; John 8: 32, 36; Philippians 4: 8

Insights from last week…

                                Past Wound or Sin                                SIGNIFICANT

STRONGHOLD =  False Message we Believe                 = INFLUENCE

Reaction / Misplaced Trust           OVER US

Many of us experience Painful Memory Déjà vu, when a present experience triggers a past hurt, sin or message in such a way that we Re-Live the experience in the here/now.

God Frees us from the hurts of the past by helping us to FORGET

Joseph named his firstborn Manasseh and said, “It is because God has made me forget all my trouble and all my father’s household.”  We can look back w/o being PARALYZED in pain.  The memory is there but the pain is gone b/c I have forgotten the hurt.

We Forget the Old Hurt b/c of the NEW THING GOD IS DOING IN OUR LIVES

Joseph continues to experience hurts and disappointments that “re-live” his experience of family betrayal, but he is able to FORGET the hurt, and live in obedience and trust in God’s goodness.  He stops dwelling on the past, and lives in the truth of the new thing that God is doing NOW.

“For as he thinks within himself, so he is.”  Proverbs 23:7 (NASB)

We choose how we think about ourselves

-I’m a failure;  -People don’t respect me; -I can’t do it; I’m not good enough
How we think and what we dwell on shapes who we become

The mind is powerful.  I become what I think.

How I think about things in my mind is how I’m going to act and live

We are able to forget the past & embrace the new by changing how we think…

“…let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think.” Romans 12:2 (NLT)

“ …throw off your old evil nature and your former way of life… Instead, there must be a spiritual renewal of your thoughts and attitudes.  You must display a new nature because you are a new person, created in God’s likeness—righteous, holy, and true.” Ephes. 4:22-24 (NLT)

…By Focusing Our Thoughts on The TRUTH

Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” John 8:32

“Know”=Personal Experience

REAL Freedom starts with a personal relationship with Jesus

So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed. John 8:36

REAL Freeedom grows by renewing our thinking with TRUTH

..the truth about who GOD is and the truth about who WE are–from Scripture

LIE                                    TRUTH                             SCRIPTURE

*It’s impossible             ALL THINGS ARE POSSIBLE      (Luke 18:27)

*I’m not adequate                   YOU ARE ADEQUATE                 (2 Cor. 3:6)

*I can’t manage             I will supply ALL your needs             (Phil. 4:19)

*I can’t do it                  You CAN do all things                    (Phil. 4:13)

*I’m not loved               I love you                                         (John 3:16)

*I’m alone                      I am With You                                 (John 14:18)

*God does not care        You are valuable to Me                             (Luke 12: 6-7)

*I must please others     You must please God alone             (Mark 12:30)

We must replace the LIES of Satan with the TRUTH of God’s Word

“Fix your thoughts on what is true and honorable and right. Think about things that are pure and lovely and admirable. Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise.”  Philip. 4:8 (New Living Translation)

“Fix Your Thoughts…”:  Fixate, dwell, Saturate, focus—on what is true

Before modern technology, banks would train their tellers to spot counterfeit bills by SATURATING THEM WITH THE REAL THING.  After countless hours of studying and handling genuine dollar bills, they could immediately spot a fake.  We can do the same thing by focusing on God’s truth-revealed in Scripture-about who we are.

REAL Freedom is experienced  by Obeying and Living according to what is true

“God’s Word in Scripture is REALITY to be LIVED.”  -Julie Gorman

The Reality/Truth that….                         Means that…

I can do all things through Christ…           I do something that feels too hard

God is with me…                                       I will spend time with & rely on God

I am valuable to God                                  I will not seek value apart from God

I must please God alone                             I will live according to God’s commands

God will supply all my needs                     I will not satisfy my needs through sin

God loves me                                              I will not listen to voices that say otherwise

What steps are you going to take to focus your mind upon God’s Truth/Reality?

If Nothing changes, NOTHING CHANGES.

But, if Something changes, SOMETHING CHANGES!
